Identity released of man hit, killed by train

The person hit by a train near Hogansville Friday night was a man from out of town, without a known connection to the Troup County area.

The Troup County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as David Josh Pursley, 38, on Monday morning. Pursley is from Tennessee, but TCSO Sgt. Stewart Smith said Pursley didn’t have a home city that they’ve identified at this point.

Around 7:33 p.m. Friday night, the TCSO was dispatched to the area of Bass Cross Road near Hogansville Road regarding a person hit by a train.

According to a press release from TCSO, Troup County 911 was notified by CSX Police after train personnel called, saying they had hit something on the tracks.

After stopping the train to investigate, officials found a bandana and a cell phone case near the tracks.

The victim’s body was located at 7:55 p.m. by the Hogansville Police Department.

All train traffic was stopped for the investigation. 

A CSX spokesperson said there were no injuries to the train crew.

CSX is cooperating with the Troup County Sheriff’s Department, who are investigating the incident,” said the CSX statement.

“CSX appreciates the swift response by local emergency personnel and extends its thoughts to those impacted by this tragic event.”
