Callaway punches ticket to state

They’re state-bound.

The Callaway Lady Cavaliers beat Temple 11-3 on Tuesday afternoon in the opening round of the Region 5-AAAA softball tournament.

With the win, Callaway advanced to the semifinals of the region tournament, and it also guaranteed itself a spot in the 32-team state playoffs.

Callaway, the region tournament’s number four seed, will face top-seeded Heard County on Wednesday at noon in Franklin.

In Tuesday’s game, Kourtney Grier provided one of the of offensive highlights with a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth inning.

Lindsay Cofield and Jasmine Dukes each had a double and a single, and Oeisha Jenkins had two hits.

Leadoff hitter Leijorey Sanders had a hit, and she also reached twice on errors and scored two runs.

Alexus Furgerson had a hit with two walks, Alora Vetsavong had a hit and a walk, and Lydia Bartlett and Natalee Waddell each had a hit.

Jenkins was the winning pitcher.
