The Callaway Cavaliers are hoping it’s a happy homecoming.

Callaway (6-1 overall), which improved to 3-0 in Region 5-AA with a 45-6 win over Lamar County on Oct. 5, will host Spencer today at noon.

The game was originally going to be played on Thursday, but it was postponed because of Hurricane Michael.

Because school was cancelled in

Muscogee County on Thursday, all sports activities were called off as well.

A win today would move the Cavaliers one step closer to a region title.

With a victory over Spencer and a win at Heard County next Friday, Callaway would secure the region championship.

If the Cavaliers make that a reality, it would be the program’s eighth region title since 2008, all with head coach Pete Wiggins at the helm.

Before the highly-anticipated game against Heard County, Callaway has to first take care of business against Spencer.

Spencer has struggled to a 1-5 overall record, but it is 1-1 in the region and very much in the hunt for a state-playoff spot.

Spencer opened its region schedule with a 28-12 loss at Heard County before beating Lamar County 28-0 at home.

Callaway opened region play with a 49-0 thumping of Temple before topping previously Bremen 37-25.

Callaway kept it going with the one-sided win over Lamar County.

The Cavaliers scored on each of their first-half possessions to build a 38-0 lead, and the second half went quickly with a running clock.

“I thought we had a good week of practice in preparation for Lamar,” Wiggins said. “I was proud of our kids the way we executed from an offensive and defensive standpoint. Offensively, our guys did a good job up front. Our backs ran hard. Defensively, we ran to the ball and put ourselves in good situations. I was proud of our kids’ effort overall. It was a big win on the road at Lamar County.”

Callaway’s big-play offense was on display against an overmatched Lamar County team.

Junior quarterback Jacob Freeman had touchdown runs of 50 and eight yards, and he threw an 11-yard scoring pass to Jymere Jones.

Cartavious “Tank” Bigsby had a 71-yard touchdown run, and he added a 50-yard run to set up another score.

Sophomore quarterback Demetrius Coleman got into the act with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Drelin Potts, and LaQuize Gilbert had a 58-yard scoring run in the second half to cap the scoring.

While Freeman and Bigsby have been making big plays all season, some other players got involved as well, including Jones, a talented junior receiver, and Gilbert, a gifted sophomore running back.

Senior running back Qua Hines didn’t score, but he ran for 39 yards on five carries in the first half.

“It was really good to see kids like Jymere, and Qua Hines, and Gilbert (get involved),” Wiggins said. “I was really proud of those guys. We were able to play a lot of people, and get out of here with a win. We just have to get ready for the next opponent, and keep working hard.”

Defensively, senior linebacker Sidderian Shealey led the way with eight tackles, and junior linebacker RJ Williams added seven tackles.

Senior linebacker Tely Fanning added five tackles, and Jalin Shephard had an interception.

Hunter Williamson got it done in the kicking game, making six extra points as well as a 37-yard field goal.

Spencer is led by Justin Newman, who was previously the head coach at Jordan.

While the season has been a struggle for Spencer, it does come in with some momentum after the shutout win over Lamar County.

Spencer didn’t play last week.

“They’ve got a good football team,” Wiggins said. “We’ve got to prepare like always. We just have to keep working, doing what we do and get better each week.”
