Early voting began in Troup County on Monday, and within the first day 608 residents had cast their ballots in person. Additionally, 508 absentee ballots were received Monday, according to election officials.

On Tuesday morning, a line of voters at the polls seemed to indicate that that number will continue to grow leading up to election day on Nov. 6, despite the fact that voter turnout in midterm elections tends to be low nationwide.

“That is a good turnout so far, and we’ve still got three full weeks [until Election Day],” Elections Supervisor Andrew Harper said.

For reference, 6,669 Troup County voters cast their ballot in the 2017 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax vote, the most recent countywide vote. According to Harper, there are roughly 43,000 registered voters in Troup County. However, a small number of votes has determined the outcome of several elections in Troup County in recent years, so everyone is encouraged to cast their ballot.

“I would just like to encourage everyone to get out and vote and show support for their candidate, whoever that may be,” Harper said.

The general election will be on Nov. 6. The following positions will be on this year’s ballot:

Commissioner of Insurance: Jim Beck (R), Janice Laws (D), Donnie Foster (L)

State School Superintendent: Richard Woods (R), Otha Thornton (D)

Commissioner of Labor: Mark Butler (R), Richard Keatley (D)

Public Service Commissioner: Chuck Eaton (R), Lindy Miller (D), Ryan Graham (L)

Harper said the Troup County Board of Elections can also answer questions from voters at (706) 883-1745.

Early voting will take place at the Troup County Government Center at 100 Ridley Avenue for 21 days prior to a general election between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Early voting will also be available on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 100 Ridley Avenue.
