It was their turn.

For the past two years, Callaway’s Keiondre Jones and Keshawn Cameron have played alongside each other, and they’ve helped open holes for some talented running backs.

On Friday night at a chilly and rainy Callaway Stadium, Cameron and Jones got a chance to show what they can do with the football in their hands.

During the days leading up to the regular-season finale against Jordan, the two seniors lobbied their coaches for the chance to carry the ball if the Cavaliers got close to the goal line.

On their opening possession, the Cavaliers drove to the Red Jackets’ 4-yard line, and Jones got the call.

Jones took the direct snap, and he bulldozed his way into the end zone for his first career touchdown, and he celebrated the moment with his teammates.

Later in the first quarter, Callaway was once again on the 4-yard line, and this time it was Cameron lining up in the backfield.

Cameron took the handoff from Demetrius Coleman, and he dived into the end zone for the touchdown, and his smile could be seen in the upper reaches of the stadium.

The touchdowns were part of a big night for Callaway, which thumped Jordan 56-0 to put the finishing touches on a successful regular season.

The Cavaliers went 8-2, and after taking next week off, they’ll begin what they hope will be an extended playoff run.

“I’m proud of our football team,” Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said. “We had a great week of practice. They responded from the adversity from last week (against Heard County), and again I’m proud of our guys. We’ve still got a long way to go. We’ve got a big challenge in front of us. I’m looking forward to the next practice.”

For Jones and Cameron, it was likely the one and only time they’ll carry the ball this season, and they made the most of it.

“It took a little convincing because (the coaches) didn’t want us to get hurt for the playoffs, but we talked them into it,” said Jones, who has been starting on the offensive line for four years.

While Jones hasn’t run the ball in high school, it wasn’t an entirely new experience.

In middle school, Jones was occasionally called upon to take a direct snap in a play that was called the “Big Mac.”

“That was me back in middle school. It was called Big Mac, so we ran it again for the last time,” Jones said. “It was crazy. I’ve been waiting on that since eighth grade. To get to run it again, it was fun.”

Later, Cameron, showed off his skills when he followed the left side of the offensive line into the end zone.

“We kind of approached (the coaches), let them know we wanted to run,” Cameron said. “We wanted to just enjoy our senior night.”

Wiggins was glad to see two hard-working players get that opportunity.

“Keshawn and KJ, they work so hard up front down in the trenches,” Wiggins said. “To see them have the get the opportunity to run the ball and score, it’s great for our team. It’s great for our camaraderie, and the energy that it brings.”

The Cavaliers scored touchdowns on each of their first-half possessions to take a 49-0 lead, and the second half went quickly with a running clock.

Nearly every player on the team got some playing time, and that included the 26 seniors who were recognized before the game.

Sophomore Demetrius Coleman, who got the start at quarterback, threw touchdown passes to Markus Morman, T Bonner and Dre Potts.

Charlie Dixon had two touchdown runs, and Cartavious “Tank” Bigsby, Jones and Cameron each had one scoring run.

After going 74 yards for a touchdown on their first drive that ended with Jones’ scoring run, the Cavaliers began their second possession at the 21-yard line.

On first down, Coleman hooked up with Bonner for a 59-yard completion to the Jordan 20-yard line.

Coleman capped that drive with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Morman, who made a terrific leaping catch in the end zone.

Following a Jordan fumble, the Cavaliers only had to go 31 yards for the touchdown, and they covered that in four plays, including Cameron’s 4-yard rumble for the score.

Senior Hunter Williamson made the third of his six extra points, and Callaway led 21-0, which was the score at the close of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Cavaliers got the ball at the Red Jackets’ 36-yard line following a short punt, and they scored a touchdown three plays later, with Dixon taking it in from 11 yards out.

After a Jordan three-and-out and a punt, the Cavaliers had the ball at their own 28-yard line, and they went back to work.

Lamarceo Brooks, one of the seniors, caught a 39-yard pass from Coleman to the Jordan 33-yard line.

Two plays later, Bigsby’s 14-yard touchdown run and the extra point put Callaway on top 35-0 with 6:50 left in the half.

Moments later, Brooks stepped up again, ripping the ball away from a Jordan player on the kickoff to give the ball back to the Cavaliers.

That set up Coleman’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Bonner, and Callaway was on top 42-0.

The Cavaliers’ final possession of the first half began at the Red Jackets’ 41-yard line, and they quickly covered that ground for another score.

Moments after a Bigsby touchdown run was wiped out because of a penalty, Coleman found Potts for a 31-yard scoring pass, and Callaway led 49-0.

In the third quarter, Dre Towns picked off a pass to set up Callaway up deep in Jordan territory.

Bryce Kurian, who was in at quarterback, had a 10-yard keeper to the Jordan 1-yard line.

Two plays later, Dixon took the handoff from Kurian and scored on a 3-yard run, and Blake Eubanks’ second extra point capped the scoring.
