The final few days before election season are upon us, with just over a week before voters head to the polls to elect a new governor in Georgia. Early voting has been ongoing for a few weeks now, so some have already cast their ballot, while others are waiting until Nov. 6.

The first few days of voting in Troup County included impressive numbers, and if social media banter is any indication, Georgians are fired up regarding this election.

There are a number of races on the ballot — most of them statewide — and we plan to write a story detailing the entire ballot for next weekend’s newspaper. We hope it will be a last-minute refresher for anyone waiting to vote on Election Day.

In the next 10 days or so, we do hope the gubernatorial candidates will be able to squeeze in a stop to Troup County as they wind down their campaigns.

Republican nominee Brian Kemp spoke at the LaGrange Rotary Club in March, but at that time we were still months from the primaries. He spent most of his time that day talking about his role as Secretary of State, not trying to rally up votes. Not long after, he was in a back-and-forth run-off with Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle.

Kemp’s wife, Marty, spoke in LaGrange in September at a meeting of the Troup County Republican Party.

Democratic nominee Stacey Abrams hadn’t been to Troup County until Thursday, when she took a tour of Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia. Abrams took a few questions from the media before departing, but understandably spent most of her time focused on Kia. However, she’s expected to return next week on Oct. 30 for a campaign stop at the square. 

We’ve kept our eyes out for a Kemp stop as well, but as of this writing, one has not been announced. However, he figures to announce new stops soon, given the current bus tour schedule on his website runs through Oct. 26.

Regardless, if either candidate stops in Troup County leading up to the election, we’ll be there with coverage, and we’ll request an interview with both. We also hope voters — especially those undecided on who they will vote for — will take a few minutes to hear out each candidate as well.

And for anyone wanting to vote now, early voting will be held Saturday at the Troup County Government Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
