The LaGrange Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution announced the winners of the American History Essay Contest for 2018.  

The title was “The Women’s Suffrage Campaign – 19th Amendment.” The amendment was passed by Congress on June 4, 1919, and was ratified on Aug. 18, 1920.  This amendment granted all American women the right to vote and hold elective office. Many Americans at the time viewed this as a radical change to the U.S. Constitution.  

This essay is done outside of school hours and the students in fifth grade must have 300 to 600 words which don’t include the title page and a bibliography. The 5th grade winners are:

• First Place – Stiles McLeod – Hollis Hand Elementary
• Second Place – Joseph Threadgill  – Hollis Hand Elementary
• Third Place – Nathan Shelton – Berta Weathersbee Elementary
• Honorable Mention – Taniya Gilbert – Ethel  Kite Elementary
• Honorable Mention – Karyse Smith – West Point Elementary

Eighth graders must have an essay of 600 to 1,000 words. The 8th grade winners are:

• First Place – Walker M. Graham – Long Cane Middle
• Second Place – Render McLeod – Gardner Newman Middle
• Third Place – Anna Fenn – Long Cane Middle
• Honorable Mention – Zoe Pike – Lafayette Christian School

There were 80 essays turned in for judging.
