Evelyn Barfield Jordan

Evelyn Barfield Jordan’s earthly life ended at Arbor Springs Health and Rehab Center Dec. 4, 2018.

She was born in Finleyson, Georgia June 3, 1935, to the late Alton and Pauline Barfield.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James L. Jordan, her son James L. Jordan, Jr., and her daughter Evelyn Ann Jordan. Survivors include several cousins.

A celebration of life service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in LaGrange, Georgia, on Friday, Dec. 7, 2018, at 11 a.m. EST. Dr. Stewart Gulley and Dr. John Beyers will be officiating. Visitation will immediately follow service. A graveside service will be Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018, at 2 p.m. EST in her home town at Mt Pleasant church. Pastor Terry Ryan will officiate.

Dr. Jordan remained in Finleyson until College. She earned the following degrees, an A.A. at Middle Georgia College, a B.S. at University of Georgia, a M.Ed. and a PHD at Auburn University

Dr. Jordan dedicated her lifetime to teaching and taught Elementary to College levels in Tennessee, West Virginia, Alabama and Georgia. She moved to LaGrange, Georgia, in 1977 and began teaching at LaGrange College.

During her career she was awarded a Star Teacher Award and selected to Young Women of America.

On moving to LaGrange she became involved in her church and community. She spent many years as a volunteer with American Cancer Society, Child Abuse Council, Lafayette Society for Performing Arts, the regional library and president of the LaGrange Women’s Club. In 2013 she received the Chamber of Commerce Visionary Award.

One of her proudest achievements was her role in bringing Dr. Stuart Gulley to serve LaGrange College as President. Another of her proudest achievements was as co-founder with Pat Gay of the Azalea Story-Telling Festival.

She retired from LaGrange College in 2001 as Professor Emeriti of the college.
