The Callaway Cavaliers were within shouting distance through three quarters, but it was a strong East Coweta squad pulling away late for an 89-67 victory on Saturday afternoon.

The Indians (14-1) have only lost once all season, and Saturday’s win was their sixth in a row.

Callaway is 2-5 overall, but it is 2-0 in the all-important Region 5-AA games.

“We did some good things in spurts, but we’re still learning,” Callaway head coach Terry Hayes said. “We’re still turning the ball over. It’s still too much self-inflicted stuff. But we’ll get better.”

Demetrius Coleman led the Cavaliers with 24 points, and JaVontay Boddie contributed 18 points.

Duke Simpson added nine points, all in the fourth quarter.

Jacob Freeman drained a 3-pointer at the close of the third quarter to get the Cavaliers within 11, but the Indians scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to build a 62-46 lead.

After falling behind by 20 points, the Cavaliers got within 11 with 2:57 to play, but they only scored two points the rest of the way.

Callaway hosts cross-town rival Troup on Friday.
