COLLEGE PARK – It was a winning road trip for the LaGrange Lady Grangers.

LaGrange played in the War Eagle Classic at Woodward Academy, and it came away with a pair of close wins.

After beating Cedar Grove 46-42 on Friday, LaGrange returned to Woodward Academy on Saturday and edged Elite Scholars Academy 50-44.

“One thing I love about these types of tournaments is we play a lot of hard-nosed, Atlanta schools,” said LaGrange head coach Stephen Tuck, whose team improved to 7-3. “They’re really aggressive, some of the most aggressive teams we’re going to play. And, you just have to learn how to deal with the contact, and teams being up in your face, challenging you. I though they did a really good job of being able to handle that.”

In Saturday’s game, Kamelah Kelley led LaGrange with 15 points, and Zaria Russell added 13 points.

In the win over Cedar Grove, Kelley didn’t have a big day scoring-wise, but Tuck said she still contributed.

“Kamelah Kelley, she had zero points, but she made some key plays in the fourth quarter,” Tuck said. “I tell them, I need rebounds, I need scoring, who made the pass, who made the assist. And we even talk about that hockey assist, who made the assist, to the assist.”

LaGrange will be at Woodland High in Stockbridge this week for a three-day tournament that begins on Thursday and ends on Saturday.

LaGrange opens its Region 5-AAAA schedule next week at Central-Carroll.
