MACON – The Callaway Cavaliers pushed Pepperell to the limit, only to fall just a bit short in the opening round of the Class AA state duals.

Callaway, making its first-ever appearance in the state duals, was ahead by 12 points with four matches left, but Pepperell rallied for a 48-36 victory.

“They’re really good, but our kids fought hard,” Callaway head coach Jason Boatman said. “I’m proud of them. They put themselves in a great position to pull it off.”

Laquize Gilbert, Anthony Elliott, Cameron Key and Lathan Patterson each won by pin for Callaway, and it also collected two victories on forfeits.

Callaway will wrestle again today at 3:45 p.m. against Lamar County.

If Callaway wins that match, it would wrestle again at 8:15 p.m.
