ATLANTA — The LaGrange Mayor and City Council participated in this past weekend’s Georgia Municipal Association Mayors’ Day Conference in Atlanta.

GMA is the principal advocate for Georgia’s cities at the legislature.

“The Mayors’ Day conference gives us as city officials a chance to learn about statewide legislative issues that affect our city and the opportunity to discuss those issues with our state legislators. LaGrange has been well represented this year, as is usually the case, with our city council members and staff in attendance,” said Mayor Jim Thornton.

“I have attended all of the policy committee meetings, so that I could discuss upcoming issues directly with state lawmakers and make sure they understand how their decisions affect us back home.”

Thornton is currently GMA’s third vice president and is in line to become GMA president in 2021.

Among those in attendance were Governor Brian Kemp, Congressman Drew Ferguson and other Georgia state leaders.

District Two Councilman Nathan Gaskin participated in several classes offered over the weekend.

“I’m very grateful for the resource of information available to me through the Georgia Municipal Association,” Gaskin said. “Participating in GMA’s Mayors’ Day has been a life-saver for me as a newly-elected city council member.”

The 2019 Mayors’ Day Conference began Friday, Jan. 25 and wrapped up on Monday.
