No injuries were reported after a truck carrying multiple semi-truck cabs and cars overturned Monday morning around 4:08 a.m. on I-85 southbound after the Georgia 219 interchange. According to Georgia State Patrol Cpl. Jeremy Hilley, the driver was towing five semi cabs and two vehicles from Virginia when the vehicles being hauled started moving and eventually caused the entire stack to flip.

Hilley said the hitched vehicles started weaving back and forth, and the driver pulled to the right side and then the left side of the road before the last vehicle veered off into a ditch and overturned.

Hilley said the interstate was shut down for less than two hours, and GSP and other agencies were on the scene for about five hours.

Hilley said the driver was from El Salvador and had traveled to Virginia to buy the vehicles. Hilley said it is not illegal to drive with vehicles stacked like this, as long as they are secured.

“He does not need a required [department of transportation] number because he is not a commercial vehicle,” Hilley said. “He is not hired for profit or anything like that. He’s just towing vehicles from one location to another.”

Hilley said the driver was cited for failure to maintain lane and no proof of insurance.

“Make sure you tow vehicles the correct way, and when you tow a large load, secured and that you’re able to control your vehicle’s speed so that you can avoid a situation like this from happening,” Hilley said.
