They’ve got this road routine down pat by now.

For the third consecutive game in the state basketball tournament, the Callaway Cavaliers will be on the road.

Callaway, which has beaten Banks County and Chattooga County in the first two rounds of the state tournament, will travel to Laney High in Augusta on Wednesday for the Class AA quarterfinals, with tip time set for 6 p.m.

The winner of Wednesday’s games will advance to the semifinals to play either South Atlanta or Vidalia.

On the other side of the bracket, it’ll be Woodville-Tompkins (Savannah) taking on Elbert County, and Northeast Macon playing Therrell.

The Class AA semifinals will be played at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville.

If Callaway beats Laney, it would play its semifinal game on March 2 at 8 p.m.

The Class AA state-championship game will be in Macon on March 7 at 4 p.m.

For Callaway’s program, getting to this point is nothing new.

This is, in fact, the third time in five years the Cavaliers have made it at least as far as the quarterfinals.

For this group of players, though, it is a new experience since none of them were playing the last time Callaway won a state-tournament game in 2017.

“They’ve never been here before,” Callaway head coach Terry Hayes said. “The coaches have, but they haven’t.”

That lack of experience hasn’t been a problem so far.

After a thrilling 86-83 overtime win over Banks County, Callaway dominated the second half to beat Chattooga County 71-59.

The Cavaliers (14-11) have peaked at the right time, and now they’re three wins away from a state championship.

“We just wanted to get to the playoffs,” Hayes said. “You don’t know what’s going to happen. You’ve got to believe, and they did.”
