On Monday, former Hogansville Mayor and retired Command Chief Master Sergeant Tommy Thrower passed away.

Thrower was born and raised in Hogansville, and he was one of the first Eagle Scouts from the city. 

Thrower served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, the Air Force Reserves from 1946 to 1950 and the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1976. He served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. 

Thrower was elected mayor of Hogansville in December 1977 to serve the unexpired term of James Boswell, and he served as mayor until August 1978. After serving as mayor, Thrower remained an active member of the Hogansville community, and he was especially involved in Hogansville American Legion Post 152. 

“He was very influential in Calvin Hipp [Veterans Memorial] Park,” said Hogansville Council Member George Bailey said. 

Bailey said that Thrower helped keep the legion post going, and Thrower was recognized for his military service and honored as the first Service Member of the Year for the City of Hogansville at a Veteran’s Day ceremony in 2016. He was 91 years old at the time.

“Two years ago, at the Veteran of the Year event, we honored him,” Bailey said. “He came in full uniform. He was so proud.”

During his lifetime, Thrower also was the manager of the Hogansville Golf Club, the director of the Franklin Housing Authority, a post commander of Hogansville American Legion Post 152, a past president of the Hogansville Optimist Club, a member of the Hogansville Kiwanis Club, a board member for the Hogansville Housing Authority, a board member for the Troup County Airport Authority and a board member for the Troup Council on Aging.

Funeral services will be on Thursday at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home and will include military honors. The interment will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery.
