TEMPLE – Callaway High’s boys’ soccer team got a much-needed road win over Temple on Thursday.

After losing to Temple earlier in the week to fall to 1-4 in Region 5-AA, Callaway returned the favor and got the road win on Thursday.

The Cavaliers dominated the game, outshooting the Tigers 24-11, and they got goals from Jose Ruiz and Joe Neese.

“I am very happy for these guys tonight,” Callaway head coach Mike Petite said. “Again, we show that we can play with anyone and when we put our hearts and emotion into the game we are a tough team. We did very well in the attack, midfield, defense and goal tonight for a truly collective effort.”

In the 26th minute, Ruiz scored his first goal of the season to give the Cavaliers the lead.

Hunter Lee delivered a strong free kick, and Ruiz gathered the ball and knocked it into the net for the goal.

The Cavaliers came close to notching another goal midway through the second half.

Nick Smith made a nice pass to Neal Ellison, whose shot attempt was stopped on a terrific play by Temple’s goal keeper.

It remained a 1-0 game until Callaway sealed it with Neese’s goal late in the game.

Neese raced nearly the length of the field and beat the goal keeper for a critical second goal

In Thursday’s girls’ game, it was Callaway falling short 3-2.

On Tuesday, Callaway rallied from a late 2-0 deficit to beat Temple 4-0, but it was unable to complete the regular-season sweep of its region rival.

Callaway, which fell to 2-4 in the region, got goals from Keeley McGuffin and Ella Cho.

Callaway’s teams will be on the road against Lamar County on Tuesday.
