A brush fire in Hogansville was put out Monday after the Georgia Forestry Commission spent hours using helicopters to douse the flames.

According to Hogansville City Manager David Milliron, more than 3,000 gallons of water were dumped on the fire, which started Sunday evening on Lincoln Street. A helicopter dumped 210 gallons of water at a time to douse the flames.

Milliron said tractors made a swath around the fire, but it jumped a ravine into an area where the city dump was located in the 1980s. Lt. Jeff Sheppard of the Hogansville Police Department estimated that the fire got about 100 yards from the nearest structure before it was contained.

At that point, the Georgia Forestry Commission was brought in.

“It’s safety first,” Milliron said. “We wanted to make sure folks were alerted and aware.”

Lincoln Street is lined with residences, but the fire was in a large forested area behind homes.

The City of Hogansville posted on its social media accounts Monday morning that no structures were in danger.

“Tractors went in and made several more swaths around it and got it to where it was well-contained,” Milliron said.
