Mrs. Miriam (Mimi) Ruth Turner Holliday

Miriam (Mimi) Ruth Turner Holliday, 94, peacefully passed away at Florence Hand Home on March 29. She was born in Ames, Iowa January 28, 1925 to Arthur and Elizabeth Turner.

Miriam attended Wheaton College and followed in the footsteps of her musical mother by studying voice and later attended the University of Maryland when her family moved to Hyattsville, Maryland. She married John William Holliday on June 8, 1946 and moved to Greenville, GA.

Miriam studied voice in La Grange with Irene Bell and later became a member and choir director for Greenville Methodist Church for the next forty years. She and her good friend Lelia Freeman formed a long lasting choral program at the Greenville school for students of all ages. Through all of this, she gave her family and community many musical opportunities.

An avid reader, she was the librarian for the city of Greenville for many years. She was a wonderful cook and was known for her “Mimi” bars, Japanese Chicken Salad and “Tunnel of Fudge” cake. She also had many other creative and artistic talents. She was an active member of the Greenville Methodist Women.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Elizabeth Turner, her beloved husband, John William Holliday, her sister Janet Turner Stransky, her brother Robert Parry Turner, and her niece Beth Stransky Feris.

She is survived by her four children. John ( Linda  Maire), Janet Powell ( Lewis), Gay Fortson (Keith), and Susan Lee (Dan) and her daughter in law , Marsha. Her grandchildren include Jennifer Kendall, Julianne Skipper (Billy), Lewis Powell, IV, Lauren Powell, Lindsey Kontovich (Patrick), Elizabeth Sheehan (Adam), Chandler Knowles (Patrick), and Daniel Lee. Her great grandchildren include, Blade Kendall, Holliday (Holly) and Susannah Lynn, Benton and Nora Kontovich, Chandler and Charlotte Sheehan.

The Gathering of Family and Friends will be Saturday, March 30, 2019 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The Celebration of Life Service will be Sunday, March 31, 2019 at 2:00pm at Greenville United Methodist Church in Greenville, GA with Rev. Martina Bober officiating. Donations can be made to Greenville Methodist Church, 502 Talbotton St., Greenville, GA , 30222.
