A Henagar, Alabama woman died this past weekend as a result of a kayaking accident on the Chattahoochee River in Harris County.

According to Mark McKinnon, public affairs officer within the Law Enforcement Division at the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Region IV-Macon Game Wardens responded to the incident. The investigation revealed a family of four were kayaking on the river when Fallon Wells, 37, and her 11-year-old son went over a low head dam, resulting in the drowning death of Wells.

McKinnon said the father and daughter were able to stop before going over the dam, but the father jumped in and attempted to rescue his wife but was unsuccessful.

The investigation revealed none of the family members were wearing life jackets. The Georgia DNR has deemed no further investigation is necessary.

First responders from Chambers County responded to the incident at about 2 or 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon, according to Kerry Pickard, East Alabama Fire District assistant fire chief.

He said there were eight or nine active rescuers deployed out to assist.

“We deployed our swift water rescue team and deployed several rescuers,” Pickard said.

The rest of the family was taken to EAMC-Lanier for treatment of minor injuries.
