Mathematically, the Callaway Cavaliers still have an opportunity to catch Bremen for first place in Region 5-AA.

Realistically, Callaway is playing for second.

After Tuesday’s 17-6 road win over Jordan, Callaway is 7-3 in the region, while Bremen is 11-1 against region foes.

Callaway has five region games remaining, while Bremen closes its region schedule with three games against Temple last week.

Since Bremen took two of three against Callaway a few weeks ago, it holds the tie-breaker advantage if those two teams finished tied.

Callaway’s only chance of winning the region title is to win its final five region games and have Bremen lose all three of its games to Temple next week.

Considering Temple has yet to win a region game, that’s not a terribly likely convergence of events.

While it looks like Bremen is going to take the region title, Callaway’s path to the second spot and an accompanying home series in the state playoffs is wide open.

After playing Jordan twice at home on Thursday, Callaway completes its region schedule with three games against Heard County next week.

If Callaway wins both of Thursday’s game and one of the games against Heard, it will finish second.

Heard County, which is 6-6 in the region, still has a shot at finishing second if it takes all three games from Callaway next week.

Lamar County, which beat Heard County three times earlier in the season, is 5-5 in the region and also still has a chance to finish second.

Jordan (3-7) and Temple (0-10) are on the outside looking in.

Spencer isn’t playing a region schedule this season.
