CARROLLTON – Callaway’s late-game rally wasn’t quite enough against Central-Carroll on Monday night.

Trailing by six, the Cavaliers scored three runs in the sixth inning, but it was the home-standing Lions hanging on for a 7-4 victory in a non-region game.

Callaway, which finished second in Region 5-AA to Bremen, has two more regular-season games remaining.

First up is today’s home game against Glenwood (Ala.) at 5:30 p.m., and it will be senior day.

Callaway finishes the regular season with Friday’s game at Troup.

After that, the Cavaliers will turn their attention to the state playoffs, and they’ll host a first-round series.

Callaway won three playoff series and reached the state semifinals last year.

In Monday’s game, both teams had eight hits, but the Cavaliers committed three errors that led to three unearned runs, and they also walked six batters.

Leadoff hitter Drake Wade had two hits and two RBIs, and Jabari Smith also had two hits.

Trent Sheppard, Destin Patrick, Walt Stewart and Austin Cardwell each had a hit, and Zach Neighbors had an RBI.

Dawson Wright started and pitched 5 2/3 innings, and Justin Moore got the final out of the sixth inning.
