In this world where there are so many different opinions — and so many different ways to disperse those opinions — there is rarely anything we all can agree on.

However, we think we finally found a topic where everyone agrees — trash and litter are a problem.

Other than politics, we get more letters to the editor about litter than anything else.  Any time we write about litter or trash pickup those stories fill up with comments. Of course, stories about litter at the lake always get more comments than stories where people actually go to work picking up trash. That’s just how the world operates in 2019.

Just about everyone agrees that trash can be an eyesore on any community, and none of us want it to be a problem in Troup County.  Of course, when many of us see a problem, we head to social media to complain. Anyone can roll up their sleeves and get to work picking up trash, but few of us do. Unfortunately, a lot more people throw trash out of the window of their car than take a few minutes to clean up their block.

However, no one can say the City of LaGrange isn’t serious about cleaning up litter.

For the second straight year, the city shut down for several hours on Friday so that city employees could walk around and pick up trash. It’s a great way for the city to lead by example.

The city also has monthly litter cleanups, where anyone can join in and help out. Those cleanups take place on Saturday mornings at different locations each month.

We’ve written this before, and we’ll say it again — trash will always be a problem in all cities everywhere. Staying on top of it is difficult, and it’s nearly impossible for any city to do so without help from the community.

We hope citizens will build on the example of LaGrange and other cities. Even just picking up around your own neighborhood makes LaGrange and Troup County a cleaner, better place to live.
