Callaway participated in the Class AA state sectional in Bremen on Friday, with relay teams and individuals needing to finish eighth or higher in an event to qualify for this week’s state finals.

Callaway made that happen in 11 different events, so the team will be well-represented at the state finals that will be held Thursday through Saturday in Rome.

Callaway’s top finisher at the sectional was Markiya Harris, who won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.86 seconds.

Niakoe Burks had a big day, finishing second in the long jump (16-11 feet) and the 100-meter dash (12.52 seconds).

Aniyah Simpson was second in the 400-meter dash (1:00.78), and the 400-meter relay team of Simpson, Harris, Leijorey Sanders and Burks placed third.

On the boys’ side, Elliott Smith had the best finish for Callaway, placing second in the high jump (6-0).

Finishing fifth for the Cavaliers were Curmondre Bray in the 200-meter dash (22.61), Osiris Rivas in the 400-meter dash (51.22), Larry Davis in the 800-meter run (2:06), and Antinez Blount in the high jump (5-10).

Darrick Williams placed seventh in the 100-meter dash (11.28), and the 1,600-meter relay team of Blount, Davis, Tely Fanning and Rivas was fourth.
