The state-championship football games will have a new home in December.

The Georgia High School Association has announced that the championship games will be moving to Georgia State Stadium, which was formerly Turner Field.

After the Braves moved to SunTrust Park, Georgia Stadium purchased Turner Field and turned it into a football stadium.

The championship games were played in Mercedes-Benz Stadium the past two years after they were contested in the Georgia Dome the previous nine years.

“We are excited to announce that the GHSA/ Tommy Guillebeau Football State Championships will be held at Georgia State Stadium,” said Robin Hines, the executive director of the GHSA.   “Charlie Cobb at Georgia State University has been tremendously supportive in planning with the GHSA an event that will provide a first class experience for our student athletes and benefit our participating schools. We look forward to our partnership with Georgia State University.”

In 2017, only two of the championship games were played in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. After the games were postponed because of weather, six of them ended up being played at high-school stadiums.

Last year, the games were moved to a Tuesday and Wednesday since Mercedes-Benz Stadium was hosting the MLS Cup.

There won’t be any scheduling conflicts at Georgia State Stadium, although weather can always be an issue in December.
