The Callaway Cavaliers will put the wraps on spring practice by sharing the field with Charles Henderson High today in Troy, Ala.

The game, which will be played at Troy University, will kick off at 7:30 p.m.

For Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins, the game will likely rekindle some memories since he coached in Troy more than 20 years ago.

“In 1997 I lived in Troy, Ala. and was coaching with coach (Claude) Giddens at Highland Home, so I’m familiar with Charles Henderson,” Wiggins said. “They had a great football team back then, and they’re good now. It’s a big school, and I know it’s going to be a tough opponent on Wednesday. It’s going to be a great atmosphere at Troy University.”

The Cavaliers have had nine practice sessions leading up to today’s game, and Wiggins said “I feel like our spring game is a great motivator. It’s also a pay-off for the work they put in from January until now.

“So it’s a good opportunity for us. It’s also a measuring stick. We lost 26 seniors, so there are a lot of holes to fill, so we’re going to see where we’re at after Wednesday.”

Those 26 seniors helped Callaway enjoy a banner season that ended with a 28-22 loss to Rockmart in the semifinals of the Class AA state playoffs.

A talented group of returning players, along with some newcomers ready to show what they can do, will try to help Callaway enjoy another strong season.

“I feel like it’s been a really good two weeks,” Wiggins said. “I feel like that a lot of guys have gotten better, but we’ve seen places that we’ve still got to work on. But I feel like it’s an opportunity to earn a spot, or for a starter to show what they’ve worked for, what they have gained in the offseason, and that relates to the field.”
