The Troup Tigers, coming off the best season in the history of the football program, will be at home against Newnan today for their spring game.

First up will be a scrimmage involving the Long Cane Middle School football team, and that will be from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m.

At 7:30 p.m. the main event will get underway, with Troup and Newnan facing off in the spring game for the second straight season.

Tanner Glisson, Troup’s fifth-year head coach, said some of the key players probably won’t see much time on the field since the games that count toward the win-loss record are still three months away.

“It’s probably going to look a little different for us this spring than it ever has as far as how many reps Kobe (Hudson) is going to take. He may not take any snaps at quarterback,” Glisson said. “(Defensive lineman) Andy Boykin’s not going to be on the field. There are a lot of guys where we already know the answer. I want to see guys that are still trying to figure out where they fit.”

Glisson is glad to be able to involve the Long Cane program in the spring game.

The Cougars have enjoyed tremendous success under head coach Torre Pike, and the team has served as an outstanding feeder program for Troup.

“Coach Pike and them do such a great job,” Glisson said. “Those guys have won championships and played for them. It’s great for us.”

In addition to the games, Glisson said there will be some other events to make it a special evening.

“It’s going to be on the radio (on WLAG), and it’s going to be interactive,” Glisson said. “I’m going to be mic’d up up. We’re also going to do two raffles. One is for somebody to kick and extra point for 100 dollars. The other raffle is going to be for them and a guest to come down and call the first play of the third quarter. It’ll be a great night.”

The scrimmage will put an end to Troup’s spring-practice period, and Glisson said it has been a productive few weeks.

“It’s gone well,” Glisson said. “Knock on wood, no injuries, and we’re finding out some things. We don’t have quite as much depth as we had last year, but we still have good pieces.”

Expectations are high for Troup, which went 12-2 last season and reached the semifinals of the Class AAAA playoffs before losing to eventual state-champion Blessed Trinity.

Returning for his senior season is Kobe Hudson, who had a remarkable debut season at quarterback and was one of the state’s top players.

The Tigers do have some key players to replace, and the potential new starters will get an opportunity to show what they can do tonight.

“Offensive line and defense is where our main focus is,” Glisson said.
