WEST POINT — A resurfacing project on Interstate 85 in Harris and Troup Counties is scheduled to begin Tuesday, May 28, according to a news release from the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Construction crews with C.W. Matthews will mill and remove the current roadway surface and then lay new asphalt on a 13-mile stretch of Interstate 85 extending from the Georgia/Alabama state line in Harris County to the Georgia 219 interchange in Troup County.

GDOT said the work will be done in both day and overnight shifts, and the entire project is expected to be completed in November.

The crews will start with the southbound lanes at mile marker 13. As each section is completed, crews will move south toward mile marker 1. Then, the work will shift northbound at mile marker 1 and proceed north toward mile marker 13.

The news release from GDOT said the final part of the project will involve resurfacing the roadway from the Georgia/Alabama state line to milepost 1 in both directions using asphalt blended with recycled crumb rubber. This portion of Interstate 85 is part of The Ray, a showcase roadway used to demonstrate innovative, environmentally-friendly technologies and techniques.

GDOT said there will be a lane closure around construction crews.

The closures will be fluid and follow the progress of the work as it moves south and north. There will be orange and white barrels to alert drivers of upcoming lane closures.

The news release said motorists should expect delays and traffic back-ups may occur on busy summer and fall weekends. GDOT encourages local drivers to find alternate routes around the work zone.
