Summer camps are currently taking place at the LaGrange Art Museum with students taking part in several interactive, hands-on activities.

“Artful Visions is our art camp for all ages. We’ve got different weeks for each age group,” said Victoria Slagle, education coordinator. “This year we are focusing on fiber arts and textiles. The kids just did a string art project, and I kind of want to go make one too.”

From weaving on an interactive loom to learning how to embroider, Slagle said the campers are constantly being engaged and exploring new things.

“We are making sure the kids are exposed to as many different fine art practices and processes as possible, all while working together,” Slagle said.

This week of camp, the museum is hosting rising second through sixth graders. Slagle said she still remembers going to the same camp when she was that age.

“Now, being able to teach art camp has been the coolest thing ever,” Slagle said. “This is my third-year teaching.”

Every day campers are learning new art skills that Slagle said helps foster their creativity.

“Kids are getting everything out of this,” Slagle said. “Being creative and having original thoughts and ideas, then being able to express those in a visional manner can help with reading comprehension or pattern recognitions that go into math. Art comes full circle.”

Not only is the camp helping young artists learn artistic and teamwork skills but also long-lasting relationships.

“I have learned from [the campers] too because they have such great ideas,” Slagle said.

“I have regulars that have come each year so seeing them come through the doors has been a lot of fun to create those lasting relationships.”
