They held their own.

Playing in front of dozens of college coaches from across the country, the LaGrange Grangers competed in a Georgia High School Association team camp in Cobb this weekend.

LaGrange played a handful of games against teams from the Atlanta area, and it competed well against each one of them.

“I thought it was great experience, great exposure for our kids, just to be up there and play in front of the likes of Florida State, Texas A&M and Georgia,” said Mark Veal, LaGrange’s head coach. “There were a slew of college coaches up there, from Division I to Division II. It was good experience, and it was good for us to go up there and play against that kind of competition.”

In one of those games, LaGrange beat North Cobb, with Kindae Maddox hitting a free throw in overtime for the win.

“That was probably our best performance of the summer,” Veal said.

Dozens of teams participated in the three-day camp that was held at Marietta, McEachern and Wheeler high schools.

The camp not only gave the teams an opportunity to test themselves against elite competition, but also provided college coaches a chance to evaluate recruits.

More than 100 schools, mostly in the Atlanta area, participated.

“Give or take whatever gym you were in, there were 200 college coaches sitting down there,” Veal said. “There were some big-time players there who already have offers, or are looking for more.”

The camp was the continuation of a busy summer for the Grangers, who have had numerous play dates, in addition to the camp in Cobb County.

LaGrange will be at home on Tuesday for three varsity games, as well as two junior-varsity games. LaGrange’s varsity team will play Trinity at 11 a.m., Columbus at 2 p.m., and Harris County at 4 p.m.

LaGrange’s junior-varsity team will play White County at 2 p.m., and Columbus at 3 p.m.

Those will be LaGrange’s final games of the summer as they prepare for a new season that begins in November.

Also on Tuesday, Callaway will host a play date that includes the Troup Tigers.

The Callaway and Troup varsity teams will play at 1:30 p.m.
