On Thursday, the LaGrange City Council approved the voting calendar for the 2019 municipal elections, which will see three city council seats on the ballot.

This November, seats from both district one and district two will be on the ballot, and current council members Willie Edmondson (district 2), LeGree McCamey (district 2) and Mark Mitchell (district 1) are expected to run again.

“Qualifying will open August 19 and close on the 23rd at 4:30 [p.m.],” City Manager Meg Kelsey said. “We will have the election on November 5. If there is any runoff, that would be on December 3.”

The council unanimously agreed on the time frame, but Council Member Tom Gore did raise concerns regarding voting locations, which the Troup County School System has requested be moved out of schools. A representative from the Troup County Board of Elections was on hand to answer questions on the polling locations, and he said it is already too close to the election date to make major changes to polling locations.

“We are actually visiting the school locations on our next meeting next Thursday as part of our regular agenda,” said Andy Harper, Troup County election supervisor. “We are going to suspend the meeting and visit the locations and assess each location. It is too late for this election, so if something needed to be changed for a city election, it’ll be two years away. For county elections, I would have to do it in December for the next 2020-year calendar.”

There are seven voting locations in the city, three of which are in schools. Hollis Hand Elementary School, Troup High School, the Troup County Board of Education Administration Building, the William Griggs Recreation Center, Faith Baptist Church, and HOPE Academy are the current polling locations. 

Early voting for city elections will take place at the Troup County Government Building at 100 Ridley Avenue beginning on Oct. 14 and continue for three weeks.

The LaGrange City Council will meet again on July 23 at 5:30 p.m. at 208 Ridley Avenue.
