Georgia no longer has a tax-free holiday, but Troup County residents won’t have to drive far if they want to participate in Alabama’s tax-free holiday.

Starting at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 19, shoppers in Alabama can purchase clothes, computers, books, supplies and other items without paying state and county sales tax. The holiday will last through midnight on Sunday, July 21, according to a resolution passed by the Chambers County Commission in May. 

This is Alabama’s 14th year participating in the sales tax holiday, starting in 2006.  

The Alabama Department of Revenue says clothing up to $100 per article of clothing will not be taxed. If an item has a price tag of $125, the consumer will only be charged tax on $25, according to the Department of Revenue.

Clothing such as belts, coats, hats, gloves, pants, shoes and more are on the exempt list. Accessories such as belt buckles that are sold separately, cosmetics, jewelry, wallets and watches are taxable items. 

Parents and guardians also get a break on computers. According to the department of revenue, a single purchase with a sales price of $750 or less of computers, printers or printer supplies are exempt from tax.  

As for school supplies, items with a sale price of $50 or less, per item, will not have tax. This includes binders, book bags, calculators, pencils and more. Additionally, required textbooks on an official school book list with a sale price of more than $30 and less than $50 are also exempt from tax. 

However, the Department of Revenue has stated magazines, newspapers and periodicals are taxable.
