With the start of a new season a little more than a week away, the Callaway and Troup softball teams got to take a test run on Thursday.

With both teams making sure every player got plenty of time on the field, it was Troup outlasting Callaway 11-8 in a preseason game.

It was the only preseason game for Troup, while Callaway will host Brookstone on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The regular season begins on Aug. 3, with Troup hosting Callaway and LaGrange in a round-robin series of games.

Thursday’s game gave the Callaway and Troup coaches an opportunity to see their players in a live setting, and they both felt it was a productive day.

“It’s nice to get to see the different positions everybody played,” Troup head coach Kayla Yeargin said. “Today answered a lot of questions for us and gives us a lot of opportunities. We’re excited for it.”

Yeargin made sure to give every player in uniform ample opportunity to show what they could do.

“Everybody got at least two at-bats, and three innings in the field,” Yeargin said. “Overall, we’re very excited. Defensively we looked great. Offensively we put the ball in play. And having depth this year, at every position, is big.”

Robyn McCann, Callaway’s head coach, was happy that her players got “to see some live pitching. That’s what we wanted to do.”

McCann was looking forward to seeing some of her talented newcomers in action, and she expects some of them to compete for playing time.

“We’ve got girls that can play,” McCann said. “We’ve got ninth-graders that can play where my older girls are.”

McCann said she’ll approach next week’s preseason game against Brookstone more like a regular-season game.

“We’re excited about the scrimmage game,” she said. “It’ll give our varsity girls a chance to play a lot.”
