OUR VIEW: Why it’s important to give blood

LifeSouth said this week that blood levels at local hospitals remain below a two-day supply, which is unfortunately a typical problem during the summer months.

LifeSouth prefers to have a three to four day supply available, just in case of an emergency situation, according to Melinda Hinds, district community development coordinator.

“It is pretty serious,” she said. “Anytime it drops to that area or below, it is serious. There could a trauma at a hospital, and you want those facilities to be where they need to be.”

We’re sure that quote is as alarming to readers as it is to us.

Everyone is busy, especially this time of year. School starts back in just a few days, and many families are spending their free time trying to get ready, while also enjoying the last free days of summer.

However, if someone we love is in the hospital, we want there to be blood available if it’s needed. Giving blood is extremely important and necessary. If no one gave blood, we could all be in big trouble.

The process to give blood is easy and only takes about 10 minutes.

“We have snacks, drinks and a T-shirt as a thank you for taking that time,” Hinds said. “From the time you get on the bus until you get off the bus, it could mean a lifetime to somebody else.”

Hinds said people need to weigh more than 110 pounds and be 17 years of age or older. If a person is 16 years old, they need a parent’s permission through a consent form. Additionally, they need photo identification, drink plenty of water and to have eaten something before donating.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3, a bloodmobile will be at the Walmart in Valley, Alabama. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5, a bloodmobile will be at the Walmart on New Franklin Road.
