After a close call in its first game, the LaGrange Academy softball team broke through for its first win of the season with a 7-1 victory over visiting Griffin Christian on Monday afternoon.

LaGrange Academy opened its season with a 6-4 loss at Terrell Academy last week.

“Other than a few mistakes we made down there, we had that game won,” said Charles Parker, LaGrange Academy’s veteran head coach.

LaGrange Academy cut down on those mistakes on Monday, playing a clean game to dispatch Griffin Christian at home.

Griffin Christian scored a run in the top of the first inning, but the rest of the game belonged to LaGrange Academy.

LaGrange Academy took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second, and it added singled runs in the third and seventh innings and two in the fourth.

Laney Lackey helped lead the LaGrange Academy offensive effort with two doubles, and Kelsey Cotton also had two hits.

Leadoff hitter Amber Corley and Caley Worsely each had hits and were on base three times, and McKenzie Jones had a single.

Madison Petite reached twice on walks, and Natalee Waddell was on base twice on errors.

Lackey and Corley combined to get the job done on the mound.

LaGrange Academy hosts Heritage on Wednesday, with first pitch set for 5 p.m.
