It’ll be a clash of the titans when the Callaway Cavaliers and Troup Tigers square off at what should be a jam-packed Callaway Stadium on Friday night.

It’s a game that features two teams that reached the state semifinals last season, and are expected to be among the last teams standing once again this year.

Callaway improved to 2-1 with last week’s 69-0 win over Cross Keys, while outlasted Harris County 27-21.

This will be the 10th time the two teams have played since 2008, and Troup owns a 5-4 lead in the series after winning last year’s game 37-20.

Callaway began this season with a hard-fought 10-7 road loss to Opelika before overwhelming LaGrange 56-10.

Callaway has won its past two games by a combined score of 125-10, but the task will likely be a lot more difficult this season against a Troup team that has won 12 of its past 13 regular-season games and 15 of 17 overall.

“Troup’s got a great football team,” Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said. “They have a lot of explosive players, they’re big on defense, they run to the ball. It’ll be a tough opponent. We’ll have to prepare well, and stay focused, and minimize mistakes.”

While Callaway is coming off back-to-back blowout victories, Troup had its hands full with Harris County last week.

Harris County had the ball at the end, but Troup’s Jabralin Gooden came up with an interception to finish it and keep his team unbeaten.

“We’re going to take everybody’s best shot,” Troup head coach Tanner Glisson said. “We know that, and my hats off to them. They played really well.”

Also this week, the Lafayette Christian School Cougars will be at home against Central Christian on Friday, and it will be homecoming.

Lafayette Christian has won three consecutive games after opening with a loss.

LaGrange, which improved to 2-1 with an 18-14 win over Hampton, is off this week.
