Ancient biblical times and food will soon come together for the first ever Olive Festival, hosted by the Biblical History Center. 

“This is definitely an event for foodies,” said Christy Barker, assistant director of education and programs. “We will be talking about food in the ancient world. You can walk through our outdoor space that we have here at our museum called our archaeological replica garden and it’s like you’re in the ancient world.”

The festival will be a hands-on, immersive experience for those looking to learn more about the ancient world or families looking to have a family fun event to attend. 

Held on Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., attendees can come when they want and take their time visiting each station to learn about history.

“You’ll learn about what kind of fish ancient people would have eaten. We’re going to have a market set up with samples of foods from our biblical meals, like chicken and hummus, mixed nuts, raisins, all foods that people in the ancient world would have eaten so you can come and sample those foods,” Barker said. “We partnered with the Olive Growers Association here in Georgia for this event. It promises to be a really fun day.” 

Tickets cost $25 per adult for ages 13 and up and $18 for children ages 6-years-old to 12. 

“We would love to have anyone,” Barker said. “This is the first ever Olive Festival, and so we are so excited about that. We hope this is something that we can continue for many years to come. And if you’ve ever wanted to come and do a biblical meal experience with us, you know, this is a great way to kind of have a little sample of that and try the foods that we do serve in our biblical meal on a regular basis.”

Barker said they came up with this event after looking for olive oil to sell in the museum store. 

“We were hoping to have something local and that is when we found out about the Georgia Olive Growers Association,” Barker said. “Olive oil was such an integral part of daily life in the ancient biblical world. They needed it for not only food but for soap and for cleaning themselves or for lighting their oil lamps. Since it was such a large part of ancient life, we thought it would be great to have an event that focuses on that.”
