The Troup County Fire Department is bringing awareness to fire safety throughout the month of October in honor of National Fire Prevention Month.

During October, the fire department will host educational trainings for children in the community, according to a press release from the county.

The fire department plans to make a distinct effort to educate local children on fire safety and home safety. Troup County firefighters will visit schools in the Troup County School System, as well as various child care centers to teach fire safety lessons and interactive prevention tips to local children in our community.

The goal of Fire Prevention Month is to raise awareness for fire safety and help ensure preparedness in the event of an emergency. School visits teach simplified fire safety content for young children, such as the role of a firefighter, the importance of Emergency 911 and learning their home address, home fire prevention tips and “Stop, drop and roll.” During the lessons, firefighters demonstrate how to conduct “Stop, drop and roll” properly before dressing in full firefighter gear and answering any questions that may arise. The school visits also include a surprise visit from mascot Sparky.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 2019 campaign for Fire Prevention Week is “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape.”

The Troup County Fire Department is proud to support their mission, as well as their theme for 2019. The fire department encourages conversation between families regarding fire safety prevention, as well as the development of a home fire escape plan.
