Troup County Parks and Recreation recently held a special event fundraiser for the Troup County team of the American Cancer Society/Relay for Life with the help of local youth flag football players, cheerleaders, coaches and their families, according to a press release from the county.

The special event fundraiser, led by Program Specialist and Flag Football Coordinator Darryl Holsey with Troup County Parks and Recreation, was held to benefit those diagnosed with cancer and cancer survivors through the American Cancer Society/Relay for Life.

The fundraiser involved the joint effort of over 170 flag football players and over 130 cheerleaders to sell bracelets with special messages of hope in honor of cancer awareness. 

Holsey partnered with a local vendor to help design and purchase the bracelets. The four teams to sell the most bracelets qualified to play in the popular post-season Flag Bowl, which was held at Callaway Stadium on Nov. 2. During the 7th Annual Flag Bowl, the 4/5 year old Storms, the 4/5 year old Prowlers, the 6/7 year old Packers and the 6/7 year old Patriots participated in the competition.

From the total funds raised, a check was presented to the Troup County team of the American Cancer Society/Relay for Life in the amount of $1,900. Parks and Recreation was pleased with the successful outcome of the fundraiser and the overwhelming support from the local community. 

“We were thrilled to combine efforts from participants, parents, coaches and staff members in order to offer support to Relay for Life and contribute to the mission to end the fight against cancer, which enabled us to teach our youth about the importance of working together to provide support to others,” said Holsey.
