It’s been a happy new year for the Callaway Lady Cavaliers.

After beating Temple on Friday for its first region victory of the season, Callaway improved to 2-0 in 2020 with a 59-55 road win over Spencer on Saturday.

Callaway (3-5 overall) evened its Region 5-AA record at 2-2 with the weekend wins.

Against Spencer, Callaway got a monster game from Javonna Bradford, who scored 22 points, with all but two of those points coming in the second half.

Bradford, who made two 3-pointers, was perfect on her 10 free-throw attempts, and she was 8-of-8 from the line in the second half.

“Javonna just stepped up and had a big game tonight,” Callaway head coach Deyano Martin said. “If she can play anywhere close to that, we’re going to be all right.”

Gabrielle Johnson, Callaway’s leading scorer this season, also got it done with 18 points, and she had 12 of those points in the second half.

While Johnson has been a consistent scorer, Callaway has struggled at times getting offensive production elsewhere.

That hasn’t been a problem during a three-game winning streak, and it certainly wasn’t an issue on Saturday with Bradford enjoying the finest game of her high-school career.

“That’s always encouraging when it’s a different player that steps up like that,” Martin said. “Hopefully that’ll carry over to the rest of the season.”

BOYS GAME: The Callaway Cavaliers had the ball at the end with a chance to win it, but it was Spencer hanging on for a 68-67 victory on Saturday night.

Callaway (4-4 overall), which won its first two region games, fell to 2-2 in Region 5-AA.

Demetrius Coleman led the Cavaliers with 25 points, and Javontay Boddie added 13 points.

Duke Simpson contributed eight points for Callaway.

Callaway’s teams visit Bremen on Tuesday before hosting Jordan on Saturday.
