BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Callaway, Troup, LaGrange Academy in action

The Callaway Cavaliers (5-4 overall) improved to 3-2 in Region 5-AA with a 73-29 road win over Bremen on Tuesday.

Demetrius Coleman led Callaway with 16 points, and Javontay Boddie and Duke Simpson had 13 points apiece.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Cavaliers.

“They played with a lot of intensity on defense,” Callaway head coach Terry Hayes said. “We needed that going into the Jordan game (on Saturday).”

In the girls’ game, Callaway fell to 2-3 in the region with a 58-39 loss to Bremen.

Gabrielle Johnson and Javonna Bradford each scored 11 points for Callaway.

Chaple Butler made two 3-pointers and scored six points.

Callaway hosts Jordan on Saturday, with the girls’ game tipping off at 3 p.m. and the boys’ game to follow.

TROUP: The Troup Tigers outlasted Manchester 63-60 on Tuesday to even their record at 6-6 heading into Friday’s home showdown with LaGrange.

K.J. Tucker made three 3-pointers and led Troup with 13 points, and senior post player Isaiah Cox added 12 points.

Qua Johnson knocked down three 3-pointers and had 11 points, and Gabe Cofield also scored 11 points.

Gabe Stepp and Camren O’Neal each scored points.

In Tuesdays girls’ game, Troup improved to 12-0 with a 58-20 win over Manchester.

Twelve different Troup players scored, including Aniya Palmer, who led the way with 10 points.

Monyia Murphy, Darnesheyuna McCollough and Alexcia Murphy each scored eight points, and Jada Green had six points.

Troup will carry a 12-0 record into Friday’s home game against LaGrange.

LAGRANGE ACADEMY: The LaGrange Academy Warriors dropped a 62-60 heart-breaker to visiting Flint River Academy on Tuesday.

The Warriors lost despite getting 25 points from Terence Broaden, and Andrew Knight made six 3-pointers and scored 22 points.

In the girls’ game, LaGrange Academy lost 55-29.

Ivey Portis made three 3-pointers and led LaGrange Academy with 12 points.
