In partnership with Puppy Pipeline, LaGrange Animal Services is now able to send off a few of their adult dogs to Toronto, Canada Thursday night.

Within the next few days, the Toronto Humane Society will receive and accept nine dogs from LaGrange.

The Puppy Pipeline Rescue of Georgia is a 501©3 non-profit organization that transports puppies, kittens, dogs and cats to the Northeast and Upper Midwest to no-kill shelters that will find them loving forever homes.

“It’s exciting for us because we get make more space, because we are always full,” LaGrange Animal Services Supervisor Chris Bussey. “In Canada, they aren’t looking for puppies, they are looking for adult dogs due to the Canadian requirements to cross into Canada.”

Since 2007, the Puppy Pipeline has rescued close to 35,000 animals in the past 13 years. LaGrange makes up more than 1,000 of those cats and dogs.

“It’s pretty successful, and we’re always getting new rescues on board with Puppy Pipeline,” Bussey said. “After transport, animals are typically adopted within a week through puppy pipeline.”

In the South, there is a low demand, high supply for animals and in the Northeast and upper Midwest there is a high demand, low supply. The animals sent on the Puppy Pipeline usually spend less than a week on the adoption floor before they find their forever home.

Animal shelter representatives believe adding Toronto as a destination will provide even more opportunities to help support efforts to become a no-kill shelter.

Additionally, the LaGrange Animal Services is offering half price adoptions for the entire month of February. The special is going on through Saturday, Feb. 29.

The special includes dogs and cats.

The animal shelter is experiencing overcrowding. So far, this year, the shelter has taken in 224 animals.

“Typically, in the winter months the shelter should be slow as far as taking in stray animals but this January has been far from slow,” Bussey said. “We have noticed puppy and kitten season has started a few months earlier than normal. This past Tuesday we took in 25 animals from various parts of LaGrange and rural Troup County.”

The LaGrange Animal Services building is at 1390 Orchard Hill Road in LaGrange. You can also reach them at (706) 298-3606 or via Facebook at facebook.com/CityOfLaGrangeAnimalShelter/.
