Cavaliers fall short in title game

COLUMBUS – It was a tough night for the Callaway Cavaliers, who fell to Spencer 84-58 in the boys Region 5-AA championship game.

Callaway’s girls’ team also came up short on Saturday, falling to Heard County 46-17 in the region’s third-place game.

The games were played at Spencer.

While the Cavaliers will host a first-round state-tournament game on Saturday as the region’s number two seed, the Lady Cavaliers will be on the road on Friday.

In Saturday’s boys’ game, Javontay Boddie led the Cavaliers with 12 points, Demetrius Coleman added 11 points, Jacob Freeman scored 10 points, and Duke Simpson had nine points.

The Cavaliers were down 26-20 after the first quarter, and they trailed 48-36 at the half and 67-52 after three quarters.

Callaway was outscored 17-6 in the fourth quarter.

In the girls’ game, Callaway was unable to get anything going offensively.

The Lady Cavaliers scored eight points through the first three quarters before scoring seven points in the final quarter.

Gabrielle Johnson, who made three 3-pointers, led Callaway with 14 points.

The rest of the team combined for three points.
