The city of LaGrange and The LaGrange Daily News partnered to clean up a part of LaGrange Saturday morning as part of the city’s monthly cleanup.

According to a news release from the city, about 25 people participated in the litter clean up, including LaGrange Mayor Jim Thornton and his wife Corinne Thornton, LaGrange Youth Council members, LaGrange College’s Alpha Delta Gamma fraternity members and LaGrange Daily News employees.

The litter cleanup events are hosted once a month, are free to participate and open to the public. The city provides the vests, trash bags and gloves.

According to the city, the litter cleanup campaign began in April 2018 when LaGrange City Manager Meg Kelsey wanted to send a message to the community that the city is serious about cleaning up the community.

“Kelsey shut down the city government and hundreds of city employees picked up litter,” the news release said. “This initial event was so successful the city decided to begin hosting monthly litter pickups.”

The city is recognized by the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation for the cleanup initiative and recently won a first-place award for litter prevention at the 2019 Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation Awards.

The next cleanup will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 7 at Jones Street Park. LaGrange College is the community partner.

On April 24, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., LaGrange employees are scheduled to pick up trash throughout the community.
