Five local wrestlers will return home from the state meet in Macon with medals, and one of them has an opportunity to win a championship.

Callaway’s Laquize Gilbert, who has had a remarkable season with just one loss, will wrestle in the 160-pound final in Class AA.

Gilbert has won all three of his matches so far, including an overtime win against Toombs County’s Chandler Lynn, a victory that put him in the finals.

Also for Callaway, Anthony Elliott will wrestle in the third-place match at 182 pounds.

Elliott lost a hard-fought 3-1 decision to Brice Noggle of Elbert County before bouncing back to beat Tyrone Wright of Spencer to earn a chance to wrestle for third place.

Ladarrious Williams (132 pounds) is 2-2, and he’ll wrestle for fifth place on Saturday.

For Troup, Michael Irvin has enjoyed a successful tournament, and he’ll wrestle for third place at 285 pounds on Saturday.

Irvin is 4-1, and that includes an overtime victory over West Laurens’ Spencer Dacus.

Irvin followed that up with a victory over Eastside’s Seth Martin to advance to the third-place match.

Also for Troup, Kullum Irvin went 1-2 at 145 pounds, and Camden Roberts lost both of his mathes at 106 pounds.

For LaGrange, Jacob Anderson (160 pounds) will wrestle for third place after winning three of his first four matches.

After losing to Cartersville’s Jabril Williams in the semifinals, Anderson bounced back to beat Flowery Branch’s Chris Webb 2-1.

LaGrange’s Matt Callaway was in position to possibly place, but his tournament ended when he suffered an injury during a match against Baldwin’s Christopher Green.

Callaway was 2-1 before losing by injury default to Green.

LaGrange’s Colin Cavender (138 pounds) finished with a 2-2 record.
