Everything seemed to be going Callaway’s way.

After falling behind by 12 points at the half of Saturday’s state-tournament game against Model, Callaway came to life and had a nine-point lead with less than four minutes to play.

In the end, though, it wasn’t Callaway’s night.

Model, after watching its double-digit halftime lead disappear, found its footing late in the fourth quarter and surged to a 62-60 victory to advance to the round of 16 in the Class AA state tournament.

It was the end of the road for the Cavaliers (14-8), who finished second in Region 5-AA to earn a home game in the state tournament.

While disappointed to see the season end, Callaway head coach Terry Hayes told the players “there’s nothing to be ashamed of. You’re 14-8, and you’re number two in the region. There’s a lot to be proud of.”

Javontay Boddie and Demetrius Coleman, who will lead the team as seniors next season, combined for 34 points in Saturday’s game.

Boddie made three 3-pointers and led Callaway with 18 points, and Coleman added 16 points.

Jamario Glenn, a freshman who has come on strong late in the season, scored nine points, all in the second half, and senior Duke Simpson scored seven points.

Jared Bomer led Model with 17 points, and he had seven points in the decisive fourth quarter.

The first half was a struggle for the Cavaliers.

Callaway trailed by as many as 16 points in the second quarter, and Model had a 29-17 lead at the half.

The Cavaliers made their move in the third quarter, with Simpson’s 3-pointer knotting the score at 32-32.

The Cavaliers kept charging, and Boddie’s 3-pointer late in the third quarter gave the home team a 42-36 lead.

The lead grew to 46-37 when Coleman made a free throw with 7:15 to play, and the  Cavaliers were still ahead by nine points with 3:55 to play.

The Devils, though, responded with a 17-3 run to soar past the Cavaliers and seize a five-point advantage.

Boddie made a 3-pointer with two seconds left to get the Cavaliers within two, but the Blue Devils ran out the clock to secure the come-from-behind win.
