Callaway’s LaQuize Gilbert made a run at a championship before finishing second in the Class AA state wrestling championship in Macon.

Gilbert, competing in the 160-pound weight class, won his first three matches before falling to Dade County’s Dakota Johnson in the finals.

In a competitive match, Johnson won 6-2 to capture the gold medal.

Gilbert enjoyed a memorable season, finishing with a 31-2 record while placing at state for the second time.

Gilbert beat East Laurens’ Trysten Baker, Rockmart’s Dalvin Millhollan and Toombs County’s Chandler Lynn to reach the finals.

Also for Callaway, Anthony Elliott finished third at 182 pounds as he placed for the second time at state.

Elliott lost in the semifinals, but he bounced back to win his next two matches, and he beat Allen Woods of Model 7-3 in the third-place match.

Elliott beat Oglethorpe County’s Sam Ash and Woods to reach the semifinals before losing to Elbert County’s Brice Noggle 3-1.

Elliott came back to beat Spencer’s Tyrone Wright in the consolation semifinals before beating Woods for a second time.

Callaway’s third state placer is Ladarrious Williams, who finished fifth at 132 pounds.

After beating Toombs County’s Blake Hall in his first match, Williams lost to Dade County’s Cayden Cooper in the quarterfinals.

Williams then beat Temple’s Bradrick Bennett and Elbert County’s Irbin Olmos before losing to Markevious Mincey of Vidalia in the consolation semifinals.

Williams returned on Saturday and beat Rockmart’s Caleb Cason to placed fifth.
