Three students were awarded with a scholarship Wednesday night that will allow them to receive tutoring for free.

One year ago, two Troup County School System teachers opened Two Teachers Tutoring. Charity Miller and Laura Lee Pike offer provide tutoring for ACT/SAT, and are on a mission to help support students in their academic endeavors as they develop the edge necessary for college admissions and scholarships.

Dr. John Vollenweider’s dentistry office provided scholarships to a Troup, LaGrange and Callaway High School student to partake in the classes.

“We have mentioned to Dr. Vollenweider’s our frustration for wanting to serve more students because of the expense of getting ready to go to college and college admissions and fees for applications,” Pike said. “He offered to establish a scholarship program called the Sunray Scholarship.”

The three students are the first to receive it, and Pike said they hope to have many more in the future.

“The students will learn time management tips and strategies they can take right into the class,” Miller said. “They’re also going to get content instruction in all four scenarios. They are going to get content in test taking strategies…”

The tutors offer an ACT boot camp that lasts three and a half hours, that includes a materials portfolio, content instruction, test-taking tips, time-management strategies, a full take-home practice and a test-day pack. They also offer private tutoring for English and math courses seventh through twelfth grade, ACT, SAT, TEAS and Accuplacer.

“This by far the most rewarding thing we have ever done,” Pike said.

Vollenweider said that he decided to sponsor it because he wants everyone to have the best opportunity they can.

“I want everybody to make the best of their education,” Vollenweider said. “My education is what really totally changed my life.”

Vollenweider said he didn’t grow up privelaged and his family had to work hard for everything they got.

“When they told me what they were doing, I was so impressed with how they’re helping people achieve their best with college entrance exams, I wanted to be a part of that,” Vollenweider said.

Vollenweider will be retiring this year, and Dr. Jared Kent will take over his practice.

“I have encouraged Dr. Kent to continue to be a part of this as years go by,” Vollenweider said. “I think there is a good chance he will continue to do this.”
