It was a tough day for the Callaway Cavaliers, who fell to Jeff Davis and Vidalia on Saturday.

In the first game, Callaway got outstanding pitching from Tucker Starling and Justin Moore, but it was Jeff Davis securing the 2-1 win.

After a short break, Callaway returned to the field and struggled in a 10-1 loss to Vidalia.

Callaway fell to 1-3 heading into Tuesday’s game at Glenwood Christian.

In Saturday’s game with Jeff Davis, Callaway pitched well enough to win, but it was unable to get anything going offensively.

Four Jeff Davis pitchers, in fact, combined for the no-hitter, with Callaway scoring its lone run when Wesley Marchman walked with the bases loaded.

Starling started for Callaway and he was dynamic, limiting Jeff Davis to two runs (one earned) on five hits.

“In that first game, we found out a lot about Tucker on the mound,” said Callaway head coach Dusty Hubbard. “He did a great job, threw the ball well. He gave up three hits, and just did an awesome job.”

Justin Moore pitched a scoreless top of the seventh to keep Callaway within a run.

Trailing 2-0, Callaway scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth.

Kaden Rogers was hit by a pitch leading off, and Starling and Will Cavender walked to load the bases.

Marchman walked with the bases loaded to get the Cavaliers within a run, but they left the bases loaded.

Callaway went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings.

In Saturday’s second game, it was all Vidalia, which eased to a 10-1 victory.

The Cavaliers scored their only run in the sixth inning when Starling walked and later scored when Marchman reached on an error.

Moore and Jabari Smith had Callaway’s only two hits, and Starling walked twice.

Dawson Wright, Smith, Zach Neighbors and Garrett Huckleberry each pitched for Callaway.

“We’ve got to get where we swing the bat,” Hubbard said. “We’re just not very competitive (offensively) right now. I think with time it’ll change. I just feel like sometimes we just give away at bats.”
