Ronald LaVon Carothers

1935-2020

Ronald LaVon Carothers, “Ron,” born Sept. 7, 1935, in Reading, Michigan, entered the gates of Heaven on May 28, 2020. Ron lived his life following the values instilled in him of faith, honesty, hard work and fair treatment for all by his parents, the late Frank and Emma Lucile Carothers. He was a great friend to all who had the honor to know him. Ron was a loving father and dedicated husband.

His dedication to his wife and children was without measure. Ron served in the U.S. Army. Ron then spent numerous years working in all phases of construction including pile driving, steel erection and rigging with Brown and Root, Inc. While working at Brown and Root, Inc. Ron met the love of his life, Brenda. They were married on Nov. 27, 1981. Ron and Brenda moved to LaGrange in 1983, to join Dave, his brother, at A-1 Lone Star Fence Company. Ron loved and faithfully served the Lord after he moved to LaGrange. While installing a fence at First Assembly of God, he met pastor Steve Comer, who would become a lifelong friend. Ron drove the bus for the First Assembly of God for many years. He also served as a Sunday school teacher for young children. Ron later began working at Camp Dogwood, a children’s summer camp, where he loved to teach children how to fish. He also spent many years cooking for Camp Viola. One of Ron’s greatest achievements was his love for hospice patients. From 1998 to 2017, Ron could be found on Saturday and Sunday mornings preparing breakfast for the families with loved ones in hospice. His service for hospice displays an example of his big heart for others. Ron lived his life serving and giving to others.

Ron and Brenda joined Grace Baptist Church in 2007 where they served together until his death. Ron’s greatest joy came from teaching kids on Wednesday nights, teaching Bible School, or helping in the nursery. Ron loved to sing enthusiastically in the choir at Grace Baptist Church and work with the shut-ins food ministry.

He could also be found serving with the R.U. program on Friday nights. Ron was an avid supporter of his church and community. Ron was preceded in death by his sons, Gene Carothers, Steve Carothers, and Larry Carothers. Ron leaves behind his loving wife, Brenda Kay Carothers, daughter, Josephine Carothers Cogan (Steve), and son, Mike Carothers. Other family members include grandchildren, Casey Cogan, Brandi Carothers Haba (Jon), Ellen Brown Adams (Keith), Jordi Carothers Manuel (Shane), Jake Carothers, Jessica Carothers Wolverton (Joe), Jennifer Carothers, and Steven Carothers.
