On Tuesday, Troup County School System (TCSS) held its first in-person board meeting since March. TCSS ensured visitors used Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommended guidelines upon entering the building, such as temperature checks, face coverings, and remaining socially distanced. There were approximately 30 attendees.

According to TCSS, the school system planned to hold a similar in-person format for the proposed fiscal year 21 (FY ‘21) budget hearing and the regularly scheduled June board meeting, the circumstances have now changed. Due to the increased number of coronavirus health cases presented in Troup County, TCSS will now return to virtual meetings of the board.

Those virtual meetings will begin, Thursday, June 18, at 5 p.m. with the first being a public hearing on the proposed FY ’21 budget hearing and the second meeting will be the regularly scheduled June board meeting. The board meeting will begin immediately following the public hearing.

Both meetings will be broadcast live on LGTV (LaGrange Television). As an added health precautionary measure, board members and Superintendent Dr. Brian Shumate will be broadcasting remotely through Webex through the City of LaGrange. The organization is working directly with the school system to ensure the safety of staff and community members during this process.

Community members wishing to speak may do so at the Administrative Services Building. Visitors will be required to adhere to CDC recommended guidelines such as temperature checks, social distancing, and wearing face coverings. TCSS employees will be available to assist visitors through the community input process.

To access the building, visitors will:

  • Check-in
  • Check temperature
  • Answer safety questions
  •  Remain in line at least six feet apart
  • Enter the board room one at a time
  •  Speak for no more than three minutes
  • Exit the board room through the designated exit

The school system asks that visitors exit the building upon completion of their comment time. There will be a regular meeting of the Board of Education following the Budget Hearing. Both the public hearing and board meeting will be broadcast live on LGTV.

The next hearing for public comment of the FY ‘21 proposed budget will be held Thursday, June 25, 2020 at 5 p.m.
